During pregnancy, pregnant women may be almost the same as what they can do outside of pregnancy. 

There are, however, a number of things that a pregnant woman may not do or may do to a limited extent.

 Drinking alcohol and smoking is strictly discouraged during pregnancy. The pregnant woman may have questions about other matters that you may, may not do or to a limited extent. 

These are questions such as: can I put liver pate on my bread during pregnancy? Which cheese can I have as a pregnant woman? 

How much coffee can I drink a day as a pregnant woman? Is licorice good for blood pressure during pregnancy?

 Can you change the litter box during pregnancy?

Vitamin A-rich foods and pregnant

The fat-soluble vitamin - A is passed on by the placenta to the growing baby and is harmful in large quantities.

 Vitamin A can cause growth problems in the developing fetus. Vitamin A is common in liver and in liver-rich foods such as liver cheese, Berliner sausage, liver pate and pate.

 Eating pure liver is strictly discouraged during pregnancy. Of the other foods rich in liver, no more than one portion per day can be eaten.

Vitamin A also has a water-soluble provitamin. The vitamin A provitamin is beta-carotene. Beta-carotene can be converted to vitamin A.

Beta-carotene is common in carrots and brightly colored vegetables, such as tomatoes and peppers.

 Beta carotene is excreted by the kidneys in the urine with a large intake.

Women who are pregnant or who want to become pregnant are advised to take a special multivitamin pill that is suitable for them. This special pill contains less vitamin A.

Raw milk cheeses and pregnant

Pregnant women are not advised to eat raw milk cheeses. These cheeses can contain the harmful Listeria bacteria.

 When a cheese is made from raw milk, it is on the ingredient list. Raw milk cheese made abroad is indicated by 'lait cru' on the label. Brie, mozzarella, camembert, roquefort, gorgonzola and feta can be made from raw milk. When raw milk cheeses are heated firmly, they can be eaten safely.

Caffeine (coffee, tea, cola, energy drinks) during pregnancy

Caffeine is harmful to the developing baby and therefore it is not recommended to use more than 200 mg of caffeine daily.

A cup of coffee and a can of energy drink contain between 50 and 100 mg caffeine, tea between 30 and 50 mg caffeine per mug and cola around 20 mg caffeine per glass.

Licorice and blood pressure

Glycyrrhizine is a substance found in licorice, licorice (tea), star mint tea and stimulant chewing gum.

Glycyrrhizine is a blood pressure-raising substance that pregnant women should not eat too much daily. Two drops (two chewing gums) and a cup of licorice tea will not hurt.

Herbs and pregnant

Herbs and herbal preparations can be harmful to the baby. Tansy, ephedra, comfrey, aloe, sassafras, butterbur, cucumber leaf (borage), absintheem and kava kava should absolutely not be eaten by pregnant women.

 Do not eat too much fennel, cinnamon (cookies), dong quai, fenugreek, anise, nigelle, sage, senna, ginger, hawthorn and feverfew.

Also do not use herbal preparations and teas that contain the above herbs.

Alcohol and smoking very harmful to the baby 

Drinking alcohol  and smoking is unhealthy for everyone.

For the developing baby, however, alcohol and cigarette smoke are completely pure poison that can seriously affect the baby's vulnerable cells, causing babies to be born too light and premature and to develop Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and poorly developed lungs, among other things.

Saving food

Eat opened meats and ready-made meals within two days of opening.

 Fresh salads must be used immediately after opening and certainly no longer than two days.

Eating fish well during pregnancy

Eating fatty fish in particular is good for anyone who wants to have a healthy heart and blood vessels.

it is recommended to eat a portion of fatty fish twice a week. However, pregnant women are advised not to eat fish more than twice a week.

 Furthermore, pregnant women are not allowed to eat smoked fish, vacuum-packed fish, raw fish and predatory fish (fresh tuna, swordfish, marlin, zander, king mackerel and shark). However, canned tuna is allowed.

The pregnant woman is also not allowed to eat eel, raw seafood and sushi with raw fish.

Eating raw meat; steak, steak, filet Americain

Pregnant women are advised against eating raw meat.

Filet Americain, beef sausage and carpaccio are raw meat products and should not be eaten.

Steak, roast beef, lamb tenderloin, tartar and pork tenderloin may only be eaten by pregnant women if these meat products are well-heated and fully cooked.

Eating raw eggs

Salmonella is found in raw eggs. The Salmonella bacteria will die when eggs are cooked.

 Salmonella can cause food poisoning that can lead to severe diarrhea in pregnant women and therefore

dehydration that is dangerous for both the pregnant woman and the developing baby.

Therefore avoid dishes with raw eggs, such as crème brûlée, homemade mayonnaise and tiramisu. Boil and bake eggs thoroughly.


From the 30th week of pregnancy, airlines request a statement from the midwife that you can fly.

The midwife gives this statement until the 34th week of pregnancy, provided there are no problems during pregnancy.

Exercise during pregnancy

A fit pregnant woman usually has a better birth and recovers faster from the birth.

A fit pregnant woman can also better handle the pregnancy herself.

For this reason it is important to be moderately physically active on a daily basis. However, avoid sports with a high risk of falling and bumping, such as cycling, martial arts and winter sports.

Toxoplasmosis, working in the garden and

cleaning the litter box Toxoplasmosis is caused by Toxoplasma gondii. This pathogen is found in the litter box and soil in the garden.

During pregnancy you can only change the litter box and work in the garden, if properly protected.

This means wearing good gloves and washing your hands well. However, it is better to have someone else do these chores.


High body temperatures are not good for the pregnant woman and the baby.

It is therefore certainly not to go to the sauna at the start of pregnancy.

If you want to go to the sauna later in the pregnancy, go to the least warm sauna.
