During the first half of the year, the baby goes a tremendous way in the development of movement: from lying on his back to turning the body and keeping it in a sitting position; from the constrained position in space, limited to the limits of reach of his body, to self-movement from one place to another

The age from 0 to 5 months can be distinguished as the first step in the development of the child's motor activity, which is characterised by the following achievements:
  1. development of movement and adaptation to gravity;
  2. awareness of your own body and its boundaries;
  3. strengthening ideas about your own body.
Mastering the movement and adaptation to gravity.

When a newborn leaves the mother’s womb, he experiences the force of gravity, which has a supporting effect on him and forms a security message about the world around him.

 His acquaintance with gravity begins from the first days of life, when he lies on the surface, trying to raise his head. Gravity has a certain resistance.

The infant must cope with its body and gravity in order to learn how to make such a movement. It is important that the baby adapts to the earth's gravity, then he will be able to rest and relax, following the force of gravity.

Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen believes that the infant’s muscle tone is an indicator of reaction to gravity and the degree of adaptation to it.

 For example, “low tone indicates problems with adapting to gravity; high, on the contrary, speaks of an overreaction of the body; an even, balanced tone is a sign that we feel comfortable in interaction with the attraction of the earth.”

As soon as the baby learns to interact with gravity, first succumbing to it, and then overcoming it, it will form normal muscle tone.

Awareness of your own body

This is a long and complicated process. which depends on the motor capabilities of the child and the lack of restrictions on the part of an adult, for example, tight swaddling, the use of mittens, etc.

Initially, the baby accidentally touches itself, receiving from the touch the corresponding sensations.

He touches his head, mastering many contacts: hand-head, mouth-hand, hand-mouth, hand-hand, stop-foot, hand-knees, ankle-ankle, hand-foot, foot-mouth, two hands on the foot.

All these motor stages are of great importance for the development of ideas about your own body, the understanding of your body boundaries, and subsequently, and the awareness of yourself.

0-2 months

The baby, lying on his back, is studying his own body, limited by the space of the cot or basket. It is characterised by hand-head and hand-mouth movements.

3 months

This is the stage when the arm-to-arm movement appears. At 3 months, the baby, lying on his back, resembles a frog, pulling the legs to the stomach, pulls the handles in the mouth or hooks them together.

4 months

4-month-old baby tightens his knees, while he reaches out to them with his hands and grabs. The sensations received from these movements (hands-knees) give new information about the boundaries of your body - for the first time, the legs start to be included here.

Lying on the stomach, the child pulls the handles forward and locks them in front of him, receiving not only tactile, but also visual sensations from the hand-hand contact. A child can examine his pens for a long time, then disengaging, then reattaching his fingers, thus increasing his controllability with his own hands.

5 months

At this age, the child is already able to tighten the feet to the mouth, grab them and suck the toes, even bite. This gives the baby a signal that the foot also belongs to him.

The level of controllability of the body is growing in infant by leaps and bounds. This is the stage of the hand-foot.

At this age, lying on its side, the baby also tries to reach out to the knees and feet. Interlock limbs and in this form makes them move from side to side.

Strengthening ideas about your own body

In the first 5 months of life, the child learns 4 types of movement patterns. that reinforce his idea of his own body:
  1. Vertebral motion model. The body is involved from head to toe. It uses stretching, bending, lateral bending and rotation. For example, baby. lying on its side, pulls the hand forward.
  2. Symmetric motion model. Either both hands are involved. or both legs, for example, when a child is raised from a prone position on his arms.
  3. Side motion model. The child simultaneously pulls the arm and leg on the same side of the body.
  4. Cross movement pattern. Right hand / left foot together or left hand / right foot together.
In the process of mastering movements, the child uses relaxation and pushing - these are the models of movements that are formed as a result of adaptation to gravity. With these models, children relax, coming into contact with gravity, and repel each other, opposing gravity.

Pulling and pulling are models that help the child get comfortable in space, explore its boundaries, learn how to change the position of his body in it.
