Omega-3  fatty acids are important for everyone, including athletes with many positive effects. They have been proven to enhance fat burning, reduce inflammatory reactions and stress side effects in the body, and help maintain muscle mass during weight loss. Omega-3 fatty acids also have a positive effect on the joints.
Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids prepared in long-chain, absorbable, active form, i.e. EPA and DHA. The conversion of omega-3 fatty acid from vegetable oils to active EPA and DHA fatty acids is therefore limited, especially for DHA.

The N-3 series fatty acids have many positive effects on the body, the active mover / athlete is most interested in increasing fat burning (2, 5, 6), decreasing stress hormone secretion (7), maintaining fat (muscle) mass during weight loss (11) and reducing inflammation (12) ).

Fish oil seems to reduce the amount of body fat in humans (2), and increase fat use for energy at rest and exercise (5.6). When six grams of fish oil was replaced by 6 grams of visible fat in the diet, the fat levels of the test subjects were significantly reduced in three weeks and the oxidation of fats increased in healthy adults (2).

In a previous study by the same group of researchers, six grams of fish oil per day lowered the glucose-induced insulin secretion by 40% (5). Lower insulin levels, in turn, reduce the amount of fat stored in the body. Also, oxidation of carbohydrates during glucose stress decreased by 35% and oxidation (burning) of fats increased by 35% (5).

Fish oil would seem to slightly increase fat and reduce carbohydrate oxidation even during exercise compared to olive oil (6). Fish oil may also direct the body away from the oxidation of proteins towards the oxidation of fats (14), so it may also have a protein (muscle tissue) saving effect.
The strength and endurance exercise increases the levels of cortisol in the blood stress hormone (3.10). Cortisol is a catabolic, muscle-breaking, hormone.

Addition of N-3 fatty acids appears to inhibit the increase in cortisol levels caused by mental stress (7). Reducing the amount of cortisol in the blood reduces the body's disintegration state and is therefore positive for muscle mass (9).

 High blood cortisol levels also increase fat accumulation in the middle body (8). Fish oil may therefore reduce the side effects of stress in the body.

N-3 fatty acids may also help maintain fat-free mass during weight loss (11). Maintaining muscle mass is one of the most important factors in successful weight loss. People with overweight n-3 fatty acids showed 10% weight loss after weight loss, and improved insulin sensitivity compared to n-6 fatty acid recipients (11).

N-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil also appear to have an anti-inflammatory response, and hence a pain-reducing effect (12). Of the patients with fish oil, neck and back pain, most of the 1200-2400 mg n-3 fatty acids reduced total and joint pain (12). The study concludes that n-3 fatty acids in fish oil may be a safe alternative to NSAIDs for neck and back pain (12).


N-3 or omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that the body is unable to make itself, so they need to be fed (4). Fish oil is rich in n-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The beneficial effects of these fatty acids are well known, but in the western countries they are far too low to feed, so n-3 fatty acids are recommended to be added to the diet (14).

Alfalinolenic Acid (ALA), e.g. fatty acid contained in flaxseed and rapeseed oil, is converted into eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (4) in the body. However, ALA may be restricted to long chain EPA and DHA fatty acids, especially in men, but also in EPA (15).

In men, less than 0.1% of the dietary ALA is converted to DHA (15), i.e. to obtain two fish oil capsules of docosahexaenoic acid, at least 240 grams of alpha linolenic acid should be obtained. The body thus receives the n-3 series fatty acids much more needed from fish oil. Adequate intake of DHA from fish oil or fatty fish may be important for optimal tissue function (1).
